Whenever tourists visit Bangkok, the most popular side trip will always be in Pattaya. My friend and I don’t go for the usual, so we searched for a quieter and more intimate beach place to visit. We found Ko Samet / Koh Samed. Pattaya is known for its nightlife and its lively surroundings, but because we’re not in the mood for that, we chose to be in Ko Samet instead. Ko Samet is located in Ban Phe, Rayong, Thailand, and is a 2-3 hour drive away from Bangkok..
You can opt to drive there, ride a local bus, or by a minivan. We chose to go there by a minivan at the Victory Monument terminal. Upon arriving at Ban Phe, you’ll need to ride a ferry to Ko Samet. Usually, the resorts at Ko Samet have ferries to and from Ban Phe; so you do not have to worry about this. You just need to check their ferry schedule so that you can align it with your trip getting there.
And yes, Ko Samet did not fail us!! Fine white sands, crystal blue waters, Thai massage and fresh seafood everywhere! It was the exact silence we needed away from daily hustle and away from reality. And it was just the perfect place to relax and pamper ourselves.
We stayed at Vongdeuan Resort which was really nice for a budget traveler. Nothing fancy with this resort, but it has free breakfasts, a pool, and you can even borrow DVDs for your own entertainment. ☺
Take a look of what Ko Samet looks like during the day:
Inviting, right? There are lots of activities to do in Ko Samet as well; if you want to go out and see other islands, you can just walk around and you will see stalls that offer island hopping, snorkeling, sunset watch, and the like. But you can always ask the reception of your resort if you prefer to. We have read that the best sunset in Thailand can be seen at Ao Prao! For just 400 baht per person, you can enjoy snorkeling and a sunset watch in Ao Prao.
*drum roll* aaaaand we watched the sun set. *insert happy tears here*
I don’t know if it’s only me, but there is something about sunsets that make us feel something. We tend to love sunrises and sunsets, but do sunsets make you feel sad a little? Because it is to me. It is magical and lovely, of course, but it is like saying goodbye to one beautiful thing that we hope to see again.
Sunsets are my favorite and I’m so glad that we took this trip while in Ko Samet. I certainly believe that Ao Prao is the perfect place in Thailand to see the beautiful sunset. You can witness how exactly the sun goes down here. From arriving here without the sun yet, until it goes big in front of your eyes and until it goes down and waves goodbye to you.
There is so much in this moment that I am thankful to have witnessed.
If you want somewhere quiet near the beach for a change, I definitely recommend this place for you! Ko Samet will not disappoint you. Go see this place if you have more time when you are around the area. ☺
