Most travelers look for the best hiking places in Austria because the country is known for its amazing mountains and stunning scenery. There is one hiking trail that, despite the steep competition, just blows everything else out of the water – or perhaps into it! This hiking trail leads up to a 10 meter deep lake that can only be seen for half of the year, and it is called Green Lake.
Green Lake can be found in the Hochschwab Mountains, in Tragoess, Styria. It’s one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the world.
During the cold winter months, this place is almost completely dry and used as a country park where hikers love to come and spend some time away from the urban chaos.

As soon as temperatures rise, however, the snow and ice covering the mountain tops begin to melt, and the water pours down, filling the basin below with crystal-clear water.
In the early summer, water levels go from one to two meters at most to over 10 meters. The waters of Green Lake are highest in June when this extraordinary place is invaded by divers curious to see what a mountain park looks like underwater.
In this surreal underwater experience, you’ll see fish swimming over wooden benches, the grass-covered bottom, treetops, roads, and even bridges.
