  • Bečići Beach – The Jewel of Montenegro

Bečići Beach – The Jewel of Montenegro

Let’s address the lavish title we bestowed upon this small town and its beach right now. It’s not that uncommon to hear about Bečići Beach referred to as the jewel of Montenegro or the gem of South Adriatic. A lot of that is based on the fact that back in 1935, Bečići won the title of the most beautiful beach in Europe at a Grand Prix in Paris.

This article will cover all the information pertaining to various facets of a summer holiday and by that, we absolutely mean the beach. Have the people here been living on the old glory of once beautiful Bečići? Or have they decided to maintain it and tend to it to preserve at least a portion of its inherent beauty? Find out what you can expect from your visit to Bečići and who it appeals to the most.

    Getting to Bečići

The airport nearest to the city of Budva, and subsequently Bečići, is Tivat Airport. It’s located about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the town, and you can cover that distance quite cheaply.

Read more: What to do in Kotor

There are no buses running from the airport to Budva, but a bus station in Tivat is not that far, about a mile away. Usually, the only buses you’ll see at the airport are the private ones, hired by a hotel or resort to fetch their guests. It’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to get a ride from them. There are taxis nearby, and their usual Airport – Budva price is €15. Finally, you can always rent a car, but be careful driving on Montenegrin roads as they’re often winding around cliffs and have only two lanes.

From Budva to Bečići, you can easily go on foot or by bus which costs from  €0.5 to €1 depending on where you get on.

Bečići Beach and Sea at Summer

    At the Beach

So, let’s see how Bečići Beach of 1935 match up with the contemporary tourist destination. Obviously, not a small number of things has changed, but whether they’re good or bad can only be judged on a subjective level.

First and foremost, we need to discuss the beach itself. While shingle beach may not appeal to everybody, there’s no denying it makes the beach look real classy. Pebbles are really small and make Bečići look like it’s spotted with thousands of tiny gemstones. Before you get too worked up about it, they’re still just pebbles!

However, enjoying the sight of the beach and actually walking on it or sunbathing are entirely different things. Most people just suck it up and make the best of a situation (the situation here being an uncomfortable beach) and get over the fact they’re sitting or lying on a gritty surface. It’s not like that all over, there are patches of fine sand here and there, but couple this with the fact that entire chunks of the beach are owned by luxury hotels behind you and you’ll soon realize that you’ll probably have to deal with grit.

A Gritty Beach in Bečići, Montenegro

The beach itself is spacious enough, stretching for 1,950 meters to the former fishing village of Rafailovići, even measuring up to 100 meters in width at certain points. That’s quite a lot of room, so have no doubt about finding a spot for you and your family or friends, despite a decent section of it being reserved for hotel guests only. If you bring €10 with you to the beach, you might be able to snatch a pair of loungers with a parasol. The closer you are to Budva, the less public space you’ll find, so keep that in mind.

Now, how about cleanliness? The fact is that the closer you are to all the hotels and their private beach areas, the cleaner (and more overcrowded) it gets. However, people have been reporting seeing litter along the beach towards Rafailovići, which is just unfortunate. Dogs are allowed at this beach, so you might come upon different kinds of detritus here.

As for the surrounding area, it’s as magical as it gets, and we’re not even overexaggerating. Beyond Bečići, tall cliffs rise and there are trees everywhere. It’s so lush and green that the hinterlands are actually reminiscent of Rio de Janeiro with its immense cliffs and untamed nature. Between Budva and Bečići, you’ll find Zavala Peninsula with a tunnel cutting right through it. You can actually use this tunnel to get to Budva or climb to the top of the peninsula and gaze on all the majesty around you.

Vista of Bečići Beach and the Sea

Finally, it’s time to get your bathing suit all damp. While there is sporadic pollution in the form of discarded loungers along the beach, the same cannot be said about the waters of the Adriatic Sea, at least in this area. The water is pristine, with light waves disturbing it on occasion. The temperatures during summer months and the swimming season in general (June to October) are between 23°C and 28°C. That means you don’t have to worry about cold water unless you like going for an early morning swim. There are two water sports centers, and additional centers can be found at the nearby Budva Beach. Be careful if you’re with children as the water here is not that shallow.

Read more: A Complete Guide to Italy’s Beaches

When you tire of ceaseless swimming and splashing in the water, you’ll probably want to find some shade and have a cold drink. Behind Bečići Beach, there is a long promenade that goes all the way to the village of Rafailovići. Along the promenade, you’ll find endless bars, restaurants, cafes, and shopping centers.

A lot has been invested to make this town over into a luxurious beach resort, and so far, it has been a major success. While it has undoubtedly damaged the charm of being unspoiled that pervaded the air of Bečići for a long time, it has also given rise to luxurious hotels spawning all over the place, promising 5-star quality and attracting the wealthier guests. Apparently, even The Rolling Stones and Brad and Angelina Jolie stayed at Hotel Splendid some time ago.

    Closing Thoughts

Will your visit to Bečići introduce you to the winner of 1935 Grand Prix? Probably not. Is it still beautiful and worth a visit? Undoubtedly yes. A lot has changed since Bečići won that illustrious title in the first half of the 20th-century. Urbanization has taken its toll, megahotels have stolen a portion of its personality, but the underlying beauty is still there. If you can ignore the crowds and infinite rows of private loungers, you’ll see Bečići for what it is – a great beach set in the most picturesque of surroundings with a cool story to tell.

  • Buljarica Beach – Tourist Paradise

    Buljarica Beach – Tourist Paradise

Not too far from the city of Petrovac is a beach so stunning and diverse that it’s a true tourist paradise on the Adriatic Sea. Buljarica Beach provides visitors with all the raw attractiveness of Montenegrin coastline, unparalleled in charm by other beaches of Petrovac.

While Budva Riviera holsters not a minuscule number of such gorgeous beaches, Buljarica is by far the longest beach of the riviera. With 2,400 meters of beachfront, it outweighs all the other parts of the coast near Budva and various projections estimate great things ahead for Buljarica in terms of tourism development. One day, it might be a paradise for golfers as well, but for now, it’s the most wonderful destination for beachgoers and for a lot of reasons.

    Getting to Buljarica

The enchanting Buljarica Beach is located less than a mile from Petrovac, in the direction of Bar. There are plenty of ways you can get to the beach and they’re all fast and cheap.

You’ll only need about 5 minutes by bus, and fare for a route this short is usually no more than €1. If you plan on renting a car during your stay, it will make reaching Buljarica that much easier. Get to the town Buljarica and you’ll be there in mere minutes. Of course, you could always walk there, hills surrounding the beach are great for a hike, but still not that far as you’ll be able to reach your destination in (probably) less than 30 minutes. Finally, getting a taxi for such a short distance is usually frowned upon by the drivers themselves, but if you do find someone willing to get you to your destination, it will be cheap as the journey is really short (more expensive than the bus though).

Sea viewed from hills around Buljarica beach

    At the Buljarica Beach

Located between Dubovica and Resovo Brdo Cove, there is a beach so wide and spacious, with such wonderful natural surroundings that many experts see endless potential in the further development of the region, perhaps even matching the prominence of Budva one day.

    Read more: Greek Islands Map

We’re of course talking about Buljarica Beach in the town of Buljarica. Most tourists that come here have the same questions that most people planning a summer vacation have. How’s the water like? How about the beach? Is it going to get overcrowded and are there sufficient amenities at the beachfront?

First of all, we’ve given so much praise to the beauty of Buljarica’s hinterlands, but haven’t specified why. It’s quite stunning really, with green, rolling hills covered in trees and towering cliffs providing an insanely beautiful backdrop. Lovely green fields stretch all around the beach, providing a homely and cozy sensation to those from abroad. It’s precisely these hills that are seen as the future of Buljarica’s tourism development in the future.

Rocks around the beach of Buljarica in Montenegro

Now, while we do make it sound as if the area is still largely undeveloped (which it is), it’s far from being unwanted. Summer months of July and August can see the beach getting overcrowded. It’s not a rule, but you should know it does happen sometimes. The reason for it is that it’s much cheaper than the beaches closer to Budva, which drives the Montenegrin families this way. You’ll probably run into plenty of locals at the beach, especially during the weekend.

Read more: Picturesque Town of Kotor

However, it also depends on where you are on the beach. The 2,400-meter coastline of Buljarica is half sandy and half rocky. The section of the beach closer to Petrovac is covered in fine sand, great for getting your parasol in the ground – if you can find a spot! This part of the beach is way more crowded than the part where pebbles cover most of the water entry. Not only is it more crowded, but the prices tend to be steeper than in the section farther from Petrovac.

For example, you can get a lounger at the sandy part of the beach for about €7 to €8, while walking along the beach to the pebbly area will reveal much cheaper loungers, averaging €2 per person. Regardless of which half of the beach you occupy, it will be as clean as it can get, so don’t worry about that. In fact, this is quite an impressive feat considering the fact that the largest portions of the beach are public. It shows a healthy tendency of the locals to keep their most important treasure clean!

Buljarica Beach as seen from Petrovac

The waters of this crescent beach are always warm during the summer season in Montenegro, which is from June to October, and also incredibly clean. Water temperature doesn’t go below 20°C during the summer months, which is just right for most people, including children. The sea is fairly calm here, with enough shallows to be perfectly suitable for families with children. A bit of marine life can be spotted, especially schools of small fish, so you can enjoy this fun little activity at Buljarica.

This should pretty much cover all the questions you might have about the sea and the beach. If you’re wondering about parking, you should know that Buljarica used to be big on camping, and it’s still popular today, but not to the extent it used to be. So yes, plenty of parking is available and very close to the beach at that. The campground is located near Hotel Savojo, closer to the sandy part of the beach.

There’s just the right amount of bars and restaurants that line the beach for you to have all the necessary amenities you need, but also enough public space to enjoy. You can buy fruit, delicious meals, and drinks from these venues, so you don’t have to worry about bringing all of this stuff with you. If you’re staying at Hotel Savojo or any of the nearby apartments, you’re all set and have no need for other amenities!

In 2019, Buljarica is going to be the host of Sea Dance music festival spearheaded by David Guetta and featuring huge stars such as Robin Schultz and Ofenbach. With dozens of other artists performing as well, it’s going to be a real treat for anyone visiting this beach, so make sure to drop by at least.

Nearby Beaches: Lucice Beach, Petrovac Beach

    Closing Thoughts

Buljarica is a beach at the Adriatic Sea that’s equally amazing regardless of who you’re traveling with. Due to its size, it’s very difficult for it to become too crowded, although not impossible, but most of the time, there’ll be plenty of room for everybody. Water is as good as it gets and the surrounding countryside and its sheer rugged charm just add to the overall sensation of an unspoiled tourist paradise.

If you’re the kind of person that eventually gets tired of the beach (strange, we know), you’ll be happy with all the hiking trails traversing the rolling green hills. Bars are there too for when the sun gets so harsh you just need a cold drink. Have no doubts about coming to Buljarica – it will be as relaxing and clean as you need it to be. Make sure to come soon enough, because if all the development plans come to fruition, Buljarica, as it is now, will disappear, replaced by luxurious hotels and shopping centers.

  • THE 20 BEST Montenegro Beaches

    THE 20 BEST Montenegro Beaches

To pinpoint the best beaches in Montenegro is to scour the undeniably gorgeous coastline of the Adriatic Sea and see what it has to offer. While it’s still not as a prominent of a destination as say neighboring Greece, the potential is quite obviously there.

Take a look at some of the most amazing beaches scattered around the Montenegrin coast, often accompanied by the most picturesque towns imaginable.

    1. Jaz Beach

One of the longer beaches Montenegro has to offer, Jaz is set against lush hinterlands and rising cliffs.

This sandy haven is spread over a bit less than a mile (1,300 meters) of Montenegrin coastline and is one of the more prominent festival destinations in the country. The Rolling Stones have officially launched Jaz Beach’s career when they performed here in 2007, paving the way for multiple other music festivals including Sea Dance in 2014. Rent paddle boats and kayaks, or simply soak up some rays. About 450 meters of the beach is designated as a nudist area, so there’s that.

    2. Sveti Stefan Beach

The islet of Sveti Stefan in Montenegro

Depending on how much you’d like to spend, Sveti Stefan islet might be out of your reach.

Luckily, the beach itself is located opposite the islet, across a causeway that leads to this picturesque town. It’s comprised of two beaches, the south and the north one. Keep in mind that the northern beach is, much like Sveti Stefan itself, owned by Aman Resorts and loungers may be a bit too expensive. South Beach is far more accessible, and you can enjoy the view of the islet and the surrounding natural beauty for a much more reasonable price.

    3. Mogren Beach

Mogren Beach is a charming stretch of sand, split in two by an encroaching cliff.

Located less than 200 meters from the city of Budva, this easily accessible beach offers warm sands and clean water to its visitors. The pristine condition of Mogren has been recognized with a Blue Flag award and it’s not difficult to see why. It attracts those on the more adventurous side who often attempt to traverse the cliffs the hard way – even though there’s a tunnel cutting right through the cliff. Above Mogren, plenty of greenery creates a bit of natural shade to enjoy during scorching heat.

    4. Slovenska Beach

Slovenska Beach on the Budva Riviera

Also part of Budva Riviera, Slovenska Beach has been recognized as such since the 1920s, with hotel complex of the same name nearby.

It happens to be one of the longest beaches in the country, spanning 1,600 meters from Budva Marina to the Park Hotel. It’s covered in pebbles, so keep that in mind if you prefer avoiding such beaches. Alongside it is a lengthy promenade followed by awesome nightlife venues and shopping centers, so there’s plenty to do if you come here. It’s one of the more lively beaches of the riviera.

    5. Dobrec Beach

Get a boat ride to this remote slice of heaven, far away from all the crowds often found along the Montenegrin coastline.

What you’ll receive for finding the hidden gem called Dobrec Beach is plenty of time spent by the crystal-clear waters and much-needed peace and quiet. Don’t expect much in the way of sand, as instead, you’ll be wobbling down thousands of pebbles to get to the water. Regardless, Dobrec is way too charming to pass up, so make sure to give at least a day of your journey, and try the local seafood while you’re at it.

    6. Murići Beach

Not all best beaches in Montenegro rest along the Adriatic Sea. Murići Beach is one of them, and there are plenty of reasons to visit it.

This 500-meter beach is located by the dreamy Lake Skadar under the protection of UNESCO. What’s most captivating about is an absolute lack of hustle and bustle, with most tourists deciding to remain closer to the coastline. Murići Beach consists of tiny pebbles, encircled by lush forests and ascending highlands. You’ll find Lake Skadar and the charming Murići Beach at the boundary between Albania and Montenegro.

    7. Bečići Beach

Bečići Beach, Winner of 1935 Grand Prix in Paris

Winner of the 1935 Grand Prix in Paris, when it was crowned the title of the most beautiful beach in Europe, and one of the longest beaches in Montenegro, Bečići will enchant you with its charm and elegance.

Bečići Beach is the perfect summer holiday destination for many, and it’s not at all difficult to see why. With almost a mile and a half (2 kilometers) of pure, white sand and indispensable amenities that enhance your overall experience, Bečići remains a top pick for families and younger crowd alike. Moreover, if you’re big on watersports, you can rent kayaks, paddleboats, or even go surfing if you feel like it.

    8. Queen’s Beach

Queen's Beach Sunbeds and Pristine Water

The story of Queen’s Beach is loosely connected to that of Svet Stefan, as it is (again) Aman Resorts that claim rights to it.

So, getting a lounger at the Queen’s Beach won’t be that cheap, meaning you should prepare at least $80 for the ‘experience’, per person. If you don’t mind covering these expenses, you’ll be able to enjoy a truly spectacular beach – clean, away from the crowds, and sandy all the way. The water here is fantastic, both temperature and cleanliness-wise, and worth a visit regardless of its priciness.

    9. White Beach

White Beach is located in Ulcinj and harbors a reputation of an awesome party destination.

    Read more: Kalogria Beach Guide

That doesn’t mean it’s not family-friendly. On the contrary, this wide beach of pale sands is spacious enough for children to enjoy, with about 70 canopies dotting the area for you to occupy. Naturally, you can just bring a parasol of your own and plant it wherever you feel like it. It’s only after 5 pm that the partying nature of this place comes to the forefront in the form of a cool foam fest.

    10. Zenska Beach

The word for word translation of this place is ‘Ladies’ Beach’ and it’s exactly what you’re thinking.

Zenska Beach is the place to be when you tire of your male counterpart. It is a beach for women only, but you might be a tad disappointed when you get here. While the water is undoubtedly clear and of wonderful turquoise color, the beach itself is basically a bunch of slanting rocks that look fairly uncomfortable to walk on. The reason it’s up here on this list because, if nothing else, it is quite a unique spot on the Montenegrin Riviera.

    11. Plavi Horizonti Beach

The crescent-shaped Plavi Horiznoti Beach on the Luštica peninsula is an all-time favorite of families that come to visit.

Another winner of the Blue Flag title, this lovely beach, and its golden sands are outdone only by the crystalline waters of the Adriatic. In fact, the water is so transparent that you can see all kinds of little fish swimming around, avoiding the feet of lucky beachgoers. You can see how friendly it is towards families with children, especially taking into consideration the proximity of many bars and restaurants in the shade of lush pine trees.

    12. Trsteno Beach

This small 100-meter beach is located very close to Jaz and serves like its quieter, more reclusive brother.

While Jaz beach is all about music festivals and being young and lively, Trsteno Beach that’s not too far from it is its polar opposite. There isn’t enough room to go too crazy here and it’s frequented by people looking to get away from throngs of tourists and just enjoy a day at the beach in quiet. The reason why Trsteno made it on this list is that it’s often considered to have the finest sand of all the Montenegrin beaches. This quaint stretch of sand is hidden away in a small bay, which also happens to be a part of the Budva Riviera.

    13. Buljarica Beach

    Gorgeous Buljarica Beach in Montenegro

Buljarica Beach is set in a very impressive mountainous landscape. Wherever you look, you’ll see towering cliffs looking back at you.

It’s one of the largest beaches of Montenegro, with 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) of space for you to inhabit. Moreover, it’s pretty wide as well, so you don’t have to worry about it getting overcrowded. It is fairly popular, but you won’t even feel it. Buljarica Beach is easily accessible and boasts both sand and pebbles alike. That way, it’s ensured that you will find something to your liking at this beach.

    14. Velika Beach

Quite literally a ‘Big Beach’, the biggest one to be found in Montenegro, it features almost 8 miles (12 kilometers) of fine sand.

With so much space at hand, you’ll never be overwhelmed by people who’ve also come to bask in the sun for the day. Being very close to Ulcinj, you’re guaranteed to have access to all the facilities you might need at a beach, and all the seafood restaurants you can imagine. Velika Beach also has a reputation of being a kite-surfing haven due to just the right amount of wind. The sea here is fairly clean and calm, great for the young ones.

    15. Lucice Beach

Located not too far from Petrovac and its bustling main beach, Lucice is a paradise for families with young children.

It’s a decently sized beach tucked away in a secluded bay among groves of pines and cypress trees. The sight of it all is truly breathtaking, but what attracts families the most is clean sand and pristine, shallow water. Unfortunately, it’s not that big of a secret as it used to be just a couple of years ago and it can get stuffy with all the visitors pouring in during summer.

    16. Mala Beach

The opposite of Velika Beach, Mala or ‘Small’ Beach is basically a part of the coast that’s closest to the city of Ulcinj.

Despite it being so close to the city itself, Mala Beach is by no means a spoiled mess that city beaches often tend to be. No, this place is perfect for those not wishing to stray too far from the confines of their resort and still be able to soak up some rays and relax while listening to the soothing sound of the waves. Being so close to the urban area also provides the benefit of having countless bars, restaurants, and shopping centers nearby.

    17. Petrovac Beach

Petrovac City Beach in Beautiful Surroundings

The city beach at Petrovac is much like the one in Ulcinj – clean, sandy, and close to all the goodness of the town itself. It’s easily one of the best beaches in Montenegro despite the proximity of the town.

There’s a bit of everything here, besides awesome seaside. The beachfront is unspoiled, washed by the gentle waves of the Adriatic. All the amenities imaginable are right there, in the picturesque Petrovac right behind you. You can alternate between exploring this bucolic town and hanging out at the beach. There’s also a hint of nightlife if you so desire, or if you’d like to avoid it altogether, Lucice and Buljarica beaches are a shout away from Petrovac.

    18. Kotor Beach

While not technically confined to a single area, Kotor Beach represents the best of what Montenegro has to offer.

The beaches surrounding this magnificent old town are scattered all around, not that big in their own right, but intimately beautiful. Aside from the fact that the bay of Kotor hides the most illustrious gems of the country, the beaches and the town itself are perfect destinations for couples. We’ve already mentioned some in the vicinity such as Plavi Horizont and Trsteno, but make sure to get to Bigova, Morinj, and Orahovac if you can manage.

    19. Drobni Pijesak Beach

Drobni Pijesak Beach in a Small Bay

Drobni Pijesak Beach spans a mere 250 meters of golden sands, but it’s quite enough to create some unforgettable moments of your holiday.

With just a single restaurant around, it sure seems remote and mysterious alike, far from the crowds that can get quite dense during summer months. Uncontrolled nature claims everything around this beach, so don’t expect too much in the way of amenities.

    20. Kamenovo Beach

The final entrant on our all-encompassing congregation of best Montenegrin beaches is by no means less beautiful than its predecessors.

Read more: Spanish Towns with Amazing Beaches

On the contrary, it’s another pristine Blue Flag beach called Kamenovo, or ‘Stone’. Don’t be dissuaded from coming here though, as fine sand is all over the place. There’s good food, enough music festivals to last you forever, and just the right amount of civilization for you to retreat to.

Whichever city or town you choose as your base of operation, so to speak, you’ll have access to some of the most incredible beaches Montenegro has to offer. Take advantage of its size and try to visit as many places as possible. The odds are, you’ll find more than just beaches in this rocky, unexplored country.

  • 10 Best European Cities to Visit in October

10 Best European Cities to Visit in October

Europe has been attracting tourists from around the globe year in year out, regardless of the season. With such a rich cultural heritage, amazing architecture, and bustling cities, it really becomes clear why this is the case. While some of us choose to visit the continent in the summer, others prefer to do so in fall.

For this reason, it’s always a good idea to have a list of the best European cities to visit in October or September. Europe in the fall looks extraordinary, especially when all the colors splash across its metropolitan cities, giving them unmistakable charm and irresistible appeal. Even if you’re worried about the language barrier, rest assured that the best European cities in autumn are also some of the best cities for English speakers and you won’t have the slightest trouble to get around easily.

    Budapest, Hungary

Night sets upon Budapest in the autumn

Fiery foliage becomes a work of art in the Hungarian capital. Both sides of the city burst with color as Hungarians prepare to celebrate their annual festivals – the Budapest International Wine Festival, All Saints’ Day, and the Budapest Autumn Festival being three of the most popular fall festivities. Even if it gets chilly (Octobers in Budapest might be just that), feel free to take a dip in some of the city’s most famous spas. Budapest is known for a wide variety of wellness facilities and some of them are perched high on the rooftops where you can unwind in a relaxing bubbling bath while taking in the magnificent views of the city.  Art scene comes to life during autumn and you are sure to attend contemporary art performances and exhibitions held throughout the city.

    Bucharest, Romania

    October day in Bucharest

Early October is the time when Romania’s capital becomes amazingly charming and its spacious parks and avenues rise to the autumn’s glory. Bucharest hosts amazing festivals at this time of year – Festivalul Recoltei, a festival celebrating autumn crops, Festivalul Toamnei, a festivity of traditional Romanian music, and the world-famous George Enescu Festival – the biggest classical music festival in this part of Europe. Of course, no trip to Bucharest is complete without a visit to Count Dracula’s castle near Brasov and even more so in the fall. Bran Castle is located around 3 kilometers from the capital and it’s surrounded by thick forests, adding an additional dose of mystery to an already eerie legend of Vlad Cepes. You can also expect to find fewer people roaming around the castle at this time of year so your experience will be all the more enjoyable.

    Belgrade, Serbia

A view of Belgrade in autumn

Serbia’s capital is a lovely and yet understated October destination in Europe. In autumn, Serbia becomes vividly painted in all the possible colors you could think of and visiting Belgrade as the first stop on your autumn journey is not to be missed. In October, Belgrade becomes home to many cultural events, the first and the biggest being the Book Fair held in a large complex close to the center of the city. It gathers authors from around the world and it’s definitely one of the most significant literary happenings in the region. You can also use this time of the year to go sightseeing as temperatures are still rather mild in Belgrade in the fall (around 71°F). Kalemegdan Park, the Ada Ciganlija Peninsula, mount Avala, and Kosutnjak Park should also make their way on your Belgrade autumn itinerary as these locations offer spectacular colorful surroundings and beautiful views of the city.

    Barcelona, Spain

    Autumn market in Barcelona

It’s not that all the cities starting with B are wonderful in the fall but somehow it turned out to be true. Our fourth European city starting with B is none other than Barcelona itself. You might think that summer in Barcelona can’t be matched but in fact, autumn allows you to explore Spain’s capital without the scorching heat that usually accompanies summer. What’s more, the sea is usually still warm enough to take a refreshing dip. Back in the city, you will discover that the golden hues of autumn add an exceptional charm to every park, building, or an alley. Sagrada Familia looks even more astonishing when it’s surrounded by splashes of vivid red, orange, and yellow. Barcelona’s foodie scene takes on an innovative twist between September and October so you can treat your palate by visiting the Catalan festival La Castanyada, bringing you fragrant flavors characteristic of Spanish cuisine.

    Lisbon, Portugal

Streets of Lisbon during the fall

As the summer crowds wear off after the high season, Lisbon becomes one of the best European cities to visit in October. Once the summer rush simmers down, the rates of hotel rentals follow this declining trend so you can find some great bargains that won’t cost an arm and a leg. Day temperatures are highly pleasant but it might get a bit chilly in the evening so you should take a fair deal of clothes to wear at any time of day. October in Lisbon is ideal for surfing as the gentle winds coming from the Atlantic blow the waves onto the shore. The events in the city cater to all tastes. You can catch a great movie at the international film festival DocLisboa, feast on roasted chestnuts, or enjoy the latest haute couture fashion shows at ModaLisboa, Lisbon’s Fashion Week.

    Amsterdam, the Netherlands

    Colors of autumn in Amsterdam

  • Ammolofoi Beach Kavala, Greece

    Ammolofoi Beach Kavala, Greece

Northern Greece is known for its majestic beaches and outstanding color of the sea. It is here that you will find an array of beaches on the mainland that could easily rival some of those on the famous Greek islands.

One of the is certainly the beautiful Ammolofoi beach. Tourists from around the globe often come to this beach to revel in the fine sand and crystal sea. The beach hasn’t always been so popular worldwide though. In fact, only the Greeks knew about this gem of the North Aegean and it was only a matter of time before they had to share it with the rest of us.

Emerald sea at Ammolofoi beach in Kavala

    Where is Ammolofoi?

This beautiful beach is located just 17 kilometers south of the city of Kavala, near the place called Nea Peramos. Kavala region is still not that famous compared to other parts of Greece, especially its magnificent islands. Still, over the years, a lot of villas, hotels, and resorts emerged as tourists started visiting the region bit by bit. Kavala also boasts several other beaches apart from Ammolofoi and we will certainly get to them later as they make up for perfect complementary destinations you can visit along the way. On top of that, the island of Thassos is just an hour and a half’s ferry ride from Kavala so it’s obvious why you can use this opportunity to hop on this lovely island once you settle in Kavala.

What to Expect on Ammolofoi Beach?

The beach of Ammolofoi is a lengthy strip of shore with perfectly soft sand, stretching for whopping 3 kilometers. Divided into three parts, it provides virtually anything one might expect to find on a beach – sunbeds, beach bars, umbrellas, huts, and all the other amenities that guarantee maximum enjoyment. The mere fact that the beach was given a Blue Flag award in 2006 speaks volumes about its cleanliness and beauty.

The entrance to the sea is sandy and the shallows stretch for several meters until the ground gradually descends into the depth. This is why the beach is ideal for families with small children. The sea on this beach is pristinely clean and the water temperature just perfect for cooling down on a hot summer day.

Bars are dotted along the beach and you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas in case you haven’t got your own. Unlike some private beaches where you simply have to rent a parasol and a sunbed in order to stay on the beach, you can freely set up your own equipment on Ammolofoi if you feel so inclined. In addition to this, getting to the beach has never been easier, especially if you’re arriving by car because there is a parking lot at just a stone’s throw from it.

The map of bars on Ammolofoi beach

Of course, a visit to Ammolofoi beach would not be complete unless you lounge at one or a few of its extraordinary bars. The first on our list is the lovely Blue Beach Bar and it’s also the first one you will come across as you arrive at the beach. It offers an array of drinks and snacks. If you order a drink here, you will get sunbeds free of charge – how awesome is that! It is right next to this bar that you can also find showers and a spacious parking lot with an awning to keep your car from heating up.

Peponi Beach Bar is possibly one of the most beautiful bars on the beach. There is a big parking at the entrance and you will be amazed at how stylishly this bar is furnished and decorated to accompany the existing beauty of the surrounding. The bar’s patio occupies a large chunk of the beach and there are several different types of sunbeds you can rent, provided that you order at least two drinks. Some of the loungers even have a built-in safe to leave your valuables in although you have to pay extra for those. Peponi also has a delectable selection of dishes and there is a volleyball court right in front next to which you can find showers.

Ammos Beach Bar is located right next to Peponi and just like the previous two, it has a parking lot shielded against the sun. The parasols are made from the dry palm leaves and the loungers are cozy, perfectly blended with the bar’s decor. This bar is actually ideal for families with kids because it possesses a large playground to keep your little ones entertained.

Paradise Beach Bar is next in line and it’s not any less attractive and stylish than the first three. It has lazy bags, loungers, and canopies to relax under. Just like at Ammos and Peponi, you can use the sunbeds and parasols provided that you buy at least two drinks.

You will across several other bars, such as Koo Beach Bar, Liquid, and La Roca until you arrive at the far end of the beach where you can find the Riva Beach Project, a large complex comprising a hotel with a large swimming pool, an open-view restaurant, and all the other amenities you could possibly think of. The sets of sunbeds and umbrellas are placed on wooden pedestals, slightly elevated from the sandy ground.

The beach in Nea Peramos is the main beach in this small town. It’s a fine, white-sand beach with lots of amenities and water sports opportunities. Nea Peramos restaurants are exquisite and you can enjoy fresh seafood dishes from the patios overlooking the sea.

Situated on a small peninsula next to Nea Paramos is the charming Vrasidas beach. Unlike the majority of other beaches in Kavala, Vrasidas is not organized and it’s usually the beach of choice for those who want to enjoy some peace and quiet, far away from the bustle of the busy popular beaches in the area.

At just 4 kilometers from Nea Peramos, you can find another small town of Nea Iraklitsa which has a lovely 2-kilometers long beach, with villas and hotels dotted along the coast. The beach is largely organized, offering lots of activities for people of all ages. Nea Iraklitsa makes for a perfect holiday destination where you can avoid hordes of tourists and enjoy the serenity of the area. In addition to the main beach, there are several smaller ones close by and they are perfect to have some privacy. The town is set against a beautiful backdrop of Mount Pangea which is abundant in hiking trails and picturesque monasteries which means your trip to this town will be a well-rounded vacation.

The beaches of Keramoti and Ammoglossa are located on a small peninsula just 10 kilometers from the city of Kavala. Both are fine sand beaches, surrounded by pine groves, family hotels, and with lots of amenities at hand.

Last but not least, Psatha beach is one of the secluded beaches near Nea Iraklitsa. It wasn’t until 2016 that it started gaining some popularity and bit by bit, it grew into an organized beach with all the necessary amenities and yet, without too many crowds. The only way to reach it is to go through another beach – Remvi, which is just 15 minutes’ walk from Psatha.

It’s easy to see why Ammolofoi beach is one of the best beaches in Northern Greece – not only does it provide everything you could think of, from perfectly soft sand to great amenities but it also has an abundance of other beaches and attraction that will make your Greek vacation all the more fantastic.

  • Amazing Flamingo Beach in Aruba

    Amazing Flamingo Beach in Aruba

There are all sorts of names we give to the world’s best beaches and while some names don’t give away anything about what we might encounter if we visit them, others actually reveal just that. Flamingo beach is the one belonging to the latter group – it’s a beach where you can get up close and personal with these lovely pinkish creatures.

Playful flamingos on Flamingo beach in Aruba

Still, before we delve into its exotic side, we have to take a look at other aspects of visiting it. First and foremost, we have to pinpoint its exact location, ways of getting there and see what else is there to do other than admiring these majestic birds.

    Where exactly is Flamingo beach?

Flamingo beach is situated on a long strip of land called the Renaissance Island, right next to the island of Aruba. Aruba is actually a part of the Dutch Caribbean – the group of islands just off Venezuela’s coast located in the Lesser Antilles. Although the islands are technically way closer to South America than to the Netherlands, they are still Dutch territory ever since the colonies were formed in 1815.

How to get to Flamingo Beach?

The Renaissance Island where Flamingo beach is located belongs to Renaissance Aruba Resort which means this island is privately owned and the only way to get to it is by a boat.

There are two ways to get on a boat that will take you to the island – either by being a guest of the Renassaince Resort in Aruba or by purchasing a ticket regardless of where you’re staying in Aruba. However, the second option is a bit more complicated and here’s why.

First of all, if you’re a guest at the Renaissance Resort in Aruba, you can visit the island free of charge and you get the day passes to visit it for as many times as you like. The departure is very neatly organized as the boat actually sets off from inside the hotel building every 15 minutes. However, if you’re staying at another hotel or resort, you have to pay $125 for the ticket. In addition to this, you can’t book the tickets in advance because the availability of the tickets depends on the hotel’s occupancy. So, if there are 20% to 30% vacancies in the hotel, there will be room for the passengers who are not staying at the resort. It is a bit of a lottery, especially in the peak season as the hotel is occupied to the full capacity. The best way to make sure you will get the ticket is to check with the hotel the night before you plan on visiting Flamingo beach.

    Flamingos posing in the water

Seeing as Flamingo beach is rather couple-oriented, you might want to reconsider visiting it with children for one particular reason – children can only visit it between 9 am and 10 am.

This might seem a bit disrespectful, but the management of the resort decided to introduce this rule in order to keep the pink inhabitants undisturbed and provide their guest with the ultimate peacefulness and relaxation. In case your little ones are set in their ways and insist on visiting the island, this is the only time you can take them there. The good news is that children under the age of 12 don’t pay for the boat ticket.

Why Is Flamingo Beach So Special?

This beach is probably the only place in the world where the only permanent residents are the 7 lovely pink flamingos which freely stroll around and frolic in its crystal clear water. These pink occupants have not been there forever, though. In all probability, the charming birds were brought to the island from Venezuela and in order to prevent them from migrating, their wings are claimed to have been clipped. Although some animal rights activists pertain to the standpoint of evident animal cruelty, anyone visiting the island will see that the animals are well taken care of and not neglected in any way. There is a warden in attendance at every given moment and he is in charge of supervising the visitors’ demeanor toward the animals.

Flamingos in Aruba are only found on this private island and more specifically, in its adult section so you can’t find them on the family side of the island. Everyone is allowed to feed the flamingos and as soon as you enter the beach, you will be able to spot the place where you can buy the food to feed the graceful birds. Don’t be disappointed if they’re not in the mood for grabbing a bite – after all, everyone is trying to feed them or else snapping some instagrammable shots so you might have to wait your turn to take photos with them too.

The pink flamingos are unquestionably the island’s most striking highlight but the Renaissance Island also offers plenty of other attractions that will make for a perfect vacation.

This is a full-service beach which means you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to amenities and activities. Apart from the flamingos on the adult side, iguanas rule the family section so we may freely say this is one exceptional island when it comes to animals just relaxing around. The adult section is also ideal for snorkeling as the water is perfectly transparent so you will be able to see an abundance of the underwater world.

The amenities on Flamingo Beach include a bar, a restaurant, spa cove, and the ultimately relaxing hammocks hanging among the lush shrubs and mangroves. You can also rent beach huts which are dotted around the Renaissance island, providing excellent service and comfort for ultimate pampering of your body and your soul.

The white sand of Eagle Beach is ideal for summer sports, such as volleyball and tennis. On top of this, Eagle Beach is also one of the popular spots to encounter the cute sea turtles which nestle on the beach and lay their eggs there.

The famous fofoti tree in Aruba

In case you want to escape the crowds such as those found on Palm Beach, you should head to Arashi Beach. This spacious beach is a true oasis of peace, ideal for snorkeling. Similar to Arashi is the rocky Malmok Beach. Unlike all the others, this beach has a unique setting comprising strips of rock with occasional white-sand bays. Out in the sea, there are several sunken wrecks which are ideal for scuba-diving and snorkeling so it comes as no surprise why they usually call this beach the snorkeler’s dream.

Aruba travel is obviously nothing short of a fairytale. This remote island in the Caribbean is sure to provide its visitors with some unforgettable memories. Of course, no matter how otherworldly it looks, it still wouldn’t be complete without the fantastic Flamingo Beach which is possibly one of the most unique and exotic destinations in the world. It makes no difference whether you’re traveling with your partner, kids, or even solo! Aruba will not disappoint.

    Happy Traveling!

  • Nikiti Beach in Sithonia

    Nikiti Beach in Sithonia

Unlike many other beaches on Sithonia which are remote little slices of heaven, Nikiti Beach is much more developed and catered to tourists who opt for this destination year after year. A promenade dotted with bars, restaurants, and shops will help keep all of your needs satisfied as you enjoy your visit to this part of Chalkidiki.

    Getting to Nikiti

Thessaloniki Airport is the best choice if you’re flying in for your summer holiday. At a distance of about 63 miles, getting a taxi to Nikiti is going to be way too expensive if you’re not traveling with at least 3 other people who can share the expenses. Be certain that you’ll be spending at least €140, maybe €120 if you possess top of the line haggling skills, but don’t get your hopes up.

Instead, the best way to get to Nikiti is by bus, that is if you’re not renting a car of your own, which is always the best possible way to travel for those craving to see more than just a few beaches. The first thing you should do after you land is to get to KTEL station. KTEL is the operator running all the intercity bus lines in Greece cheaply and also fairly regularly. But first, you need to get to KTEL, and the most popular way to do is by taxi. It’s not a long ride and should probably cost around €20.

The view of the Sea from Nikiti

The alternative is you take OASTH (Thessaloniki public transport service) bus, but then you’ll have to circle around the city before reaching KTEL station and you might lose valuable time and end up running late for your bus to Nikiti. The fare from Thessaloniki to Nikiti with KTEL is €11.60 in one way.

We always advise getting a car in Greece. You will be way more flexible, especially if you plan on staying longer. Certain car renting companies offer weekly packages with insurance, which is way more profitable than paying for the rent on a daily basis.

    Nikiti, Sithonia

What everyone comes to realize very soon after visiting Nikiti for the first time is that’s a perfect amalgamation of old and new, urban and natural.

The town itself consists of two sections – the old town, and the new one. The old town is further away from the beach and is completely covered in old, picturesque houses where Greek families live. It’s not that far from the beach, not even two miles, so make sure to drop by and see genuine Greek homes and traditions they uphold. Closer to the beach are all the restaurants, the fancy promenade, and all the hotels.

    Nikiti Sandy Beach with Chairs

The urbanized parts of town are all neatly interwoven with sprawling pine trees so commonly available in Sithonia. All these trees make the air more breathable and high Greek temperatures more bearable. The pines stretch as far as the beach, providing shade and fresh air to beachgoers. When you get to the end of the promenade, you’ll finally reach Nikiti Beach and it’s gorgeous white sand.

Read more: Koviou Beach in Sithonia

The beach here is quite long, stretching for a couple of miles to make way for all the visitors Nikiti gets on a yearly basis. Large portions of the beach are private, with sunbeds that belong to nearby bars and hotels. Unlike in most other places, you don’t have to pay for a sunbed. Instead, grab a drink from a bar and just take your seat. If you prefer carrying your own beach gear, there will still be plenty of room for you and your parasol. The farther south you go along the beach, less and fewer people there are and more opportunities for a secluded and relaxed day at the beach.

Pine Trees Providing Shade at Nikiti Beach

Unfortunately, the beautiful, powdery sand found at the beach does not translate well when you enter the water. At the sea floor, the sand is dark, quite different from other nearby beaches such as Karidi. and often coupled with pebbles and rocks, making it less comfortable to wade through the water – and wade you will, because some parts of the Nikiti Beach are shallow for up to 50 feet and more. While this is extremely good for children learning to swim or just wanting to play in the water, it can get a bit tedious for adults. To make up for it, the Aegean Sea will bless you with mild, calm waters with few waves to bother you.

Nikiti has its ups and downs and is very much a prominent tourist destination that tries its best to live up to the expectations of various visitors. That’s why they built the promenade and the yacht pier a bit further north up the beach.

    So, Nikiti is:

Good for people who’d like a bit of everything – there’s the beach, nice water, and shade, but also booming noise coming from multiple bars and crowds of people. It’s also very nice for families.

Bad for those just looking to relax. Sure, you’ll be able to rest from time to time, but it might be a bit too touristy for some.

    Other Activities Nearby

You’ll find plenty of things to do around Nikiti without ever going to the beach. Shops line the promenade, bars and restaurants are all over the place, hiking opportunities are all around. You can also compete for the glory of being the first to swim across the gulf to Kassandra Peninsula.

It seems that you can’t go wrong with Sithonia. All the beaches here are more or less the same, with minor differences that are hard to distinguish. Nikiti is largely the same – an amazing summer destination for a family with kids after gorgeous sea and awesome food.

  • Amazing Koviou Beach in Sithonia, Greece

Amazing Koviou Beach in Sithonia, Greece

Sithonia has long maintained its reputation as being one of the most family-friendly regions in Greece, and it’s not that difficult to see why. Besides flying 16 Blue Flags, boasting high-quality amenities or cleanliness of its beaches, Sithonia also possesses a multitude of smaller, less-known beach destinations that are just as charming (and clean) – which is exactly what Koviou Beach is.

    Getting to Koviou

One of the reasons why Koviou is not getting all the attention it deserves is mainly because of its inaccessibility. Of course, if you’re going to rent a car during your stay in Sithonia, you’ll pretty much have the problem figured out, but if you’re not – it might be a bit troublesome.

So, the airport nearest to Koviou is Thessaloniki Airport, located about 66 miles from the beach. When you arrive at the airport, you have several options. You can either take an OASTH bus, which operates in Thessaloniki or get a taxi to take you all the way to the beach. While the latter is obviously the easiest way to go, which will also cause you the least amount of headache, it’s certainly the most expensive one. Expect it to dent your budget by at least €150, so if you’re traveling alone or with your partner, that may prove to be too much.

    Read more: Greek Islands Map

Let’s go back to the bus. OASTH does local lines only, so you’ll have to ride it only to the nearest KTEL station, which, on the other hand, operates intercity routes. Locals advise avoiding OASTH altogether and just getting a cab to the KTEL station, and then taking a bus.

Koviou Beach near Nikiti in Chalkidiki

You have two options with KTEL: either get a bus ride to Nikiti (the fare is €11.60) and then figure out to cover the last 3 miles to the beach (you can walk if it’s not too hot), or ask if the bus to Neos Marmaras (€14.30) makes a stop near Koviou. We’d advise the first option, as you’ll get to save some money and the walking distance really is short.

It also depends on where you’re staying. If you have a room in Nikiti, you can just drop your stuff off and head out to Koviou on foot. However, if you’re staying in one of the hotels near the beach such as Hotel Makednos or Koviou Holiday Village, it would probably be smarter to just get a taxi in Nikiti rather than walk with all the baggage. And again, all of this is assuming you’re not renting a car because if you are, you won’t have any trouble getting anywhere.

    Amazing Koviou

Finally, the road is behind you and your vacation can commence. By now, you’ve probably already noticed a bit of a pattern in Sithonia – there’s far more greenery than most tourists assume there would be.

What this entails is there will be a lot of places to take cover from the scorching rays of the sun which can get pretty dangerous in Greece. Pine trees that dot the landscape of Sithonia and Koviou alike are the perfect escape from the overwhelming summer heat, not just because of the shade but also the freshness of the air that the trees seem to provide. After walking down the concrete path and through a lining of pine trees and subshrubs, or the beaten path if you’re a hotel guest, you will have finally reached the amazing Koviou Beach.

Rocky part of the Koviou Beach, Sithonia

The shape of the beach might remind you a little of the nearby Karidi Beach, and you would not be mistaken. It only remotely resembles a crescent, whose southern tip is marked by a steep cliff covered in pine trees, while the northern one is littered with large rocks. Between these two points, Kovious greets the visitors with warm, powder-like sand that’s very gentle on the feet (unless it’s steaming hot). It is a relatively small beach, especially in comparison to some other places in Sithonia such as the nearby Nikiti Beach.

However, this is exactly where all the charm of Koviou is derived from. Most people tend to overlook it and either settle for the Nikiti and Agios Joannis Beaches, or miss Koviou and head straight to the Kalogria Beach. A lot of visitors often don’t bother coming here, especially considering Nikiti is only 3 miles away, with Neos Marmaras just 9 miles down the road. So, while this beach does look similar to Karidi, it certainly doesn’t share its overcrowdedness issues.

Most of the gorgeous white sand beach is public. A bit closer to the south end of the beach, there are sunbeds belonging to the nearby Hotel Makednos, but you can pay a small fee to use them. The price changes on a yearly basis, it’s best to ask on spot, however, expect it to range from €2 to €10.

Sunset over Koviou Beach in Sithonia

The waters of the Aegean Sea are calm and mild here. Swimming at Koviou is absolute bliss, and you’ll really have the opportunity to relax and enjoy your holiday. Not only is the water of perfect temperature, but it’s also shallow, which is great for families with children. It’s precisely these families that are the largest portion of all the visitors to Sithonia – they know how friendly and appropriate it is for their kids. Most of all, you’ll be able to get a lot of that peace and quiet you we’ve been waiting for so long.

    Koviou is:

Good for families with kids, as shallow waters and sandy beaches are just the things the young ones need.

Bad for partygoers, much like the rest of Sithonia. The beaches here are quiet, family-friendly, with no nightlife options whatsoever.

    Other Activities Nearby

There isn’t much to do at Koviou Beach expect to relax, sunbathe and observe Kassandra Peninsula in the distance. While there’s mostly sand underneath the water here, there are some sections with rock clusters. Some visitors claim that they’re a great snorkeling opportunity, so you can try that. Or, go hiking across the nearby hills in search for deeper water to swim in.

Overall, the short walk to Koviou is going to be worth it if you’re staying in Nikiti. Renting a car is the best way to explore the area, so if you do that, make sure to give this beach (and several others) a chance.
