Most visitors to Greece tend to overlook Peloponnese when putting together their elaborate travel itinerary, desperately trying to make more room for island hopping or the picturesque Chalkidiki. While there’s nothing unreasonable about that, seeing how this Mediterranean country is beautiful all over, places like Kalogria Beach in Peloponnese still exist and are viable summer holiday destinations.

Getting to Kalogria

The nearest airport to Kalogria is the Araxos Airport, which is basically right at the very doorstep of the beach, just 4 miles away. Keep in mind that Araxos is actually a military airport, and international flights to it are available only during summer months from a select few destinations.

After you land, you might have a car for hire waiting for you, if this is something you’ve taken care of prior to your arrival. It’s usually the best way to explore Greece as there are always way too many points of interest to stop by, and constantly looking for public transport is not practical. You should be extra careful on Greek roads though, as their driving is a bit erratic!

If you haven’t arrived at Araxos Airport, but are already in Patra instead and plan on driving, know that you have about 27 miles to cover to get to the beach.

The easiest way to get to Kalogria is by taxi, albeit it’s way more expensive, so take it into consideration.

At Kalogria Beach

When you’re done with the arduous journey to your destination, you’ll be rewarded with the beach of endless sands, with beautiful pine forests watching your back.

There’s nothing better than having a forest in close proximity to the beach. Mainland Greece has a fair share of green, lush areas attached to some of its most beautiful beaches. The same goes for Kalogria Beach that has a reputation for being one of the most picturesque places in all of Peloponnese, and we’re not even over exaggerating. The beach itself really does feel infinite, and it’s got some serious width to show off as well. In fact, it’s almost 6 miles long and 270 feet wide, leaving plenty of room for throngs of tourists (and locals) that arrive on a daily basis.

Fine, white sands are the perfect place to relax and forget all about your problems, and this is precisely what you’ll get at Kalogria. Before you think that it’s all plain and boring, there are also rolling sand dunes that make for very interesting terrain, sometimes rising to 3 feet in height or more. We’ve already given Kalogria so much praise, yet we haven’t even gotten around to talking about the water. This beach is fairly shallow, and you’ll be able to wade for quite some time before reaching serious depths (as an adult of course). What this means is that families with children are going to have an extraordinary time at Kalogria, as they teach them how to swim. Moreover, the shallows make for a perfect aquamarine playpen where the kids can enjoy themselves without parents constantly worrying about them.

However, most tourists that come to this part of Greece for a holiday claim the waters of the Ionian Sea are fairly cold, so make sure to get in slowly. Waves usually aren’t too big and don’t interrupt swimming or watersports as much. Beneath the sea is also gentle, powdery sand, so you don’t have to worry about you or one of the family members hurting themselves over some debris.

Most of the Kalogria Beach is public, meaning you can plant your sun umbrella anywhere you like. Small portions of the beach are private and belong to the few bars and restaurants found in the near vicinity. They’re quaint little places that don’t make much noise, so you don’t have to worry about loud music or party animals wrecking your holiday on Kalogria. As a matter of fact, it’s good to have at least one or two venues at the beach so that you have somewhere to go if you haven’t packed food or cold beverages (which we doubt).

All of these amenities are concentrated around the part of the beach where there is a small rocky cape protruding from the sea. And one more thing – don’t miss out on the opportunity to observe the sun as it sets on the horizon. This beach is very famous for its colorful, romantic sunsets that really have a way of lingering in the memory.

Kalogria is:

Good for people looking to spend some time at the Ionian Sea, without all the noise of never-ending parties such as the ones on the nearby island of Zakynthos. Families will also have an amazing time here, as shallow waters are well-suited to the youngest population.

Bad for anyone after parties or crazy activities. You won’t find much to do here besides enjoying yourself and doing the least amount of work. Look elsewhere for better nightlife options.

Strofilia

Hiding the lovely Kalogria from the rest of the world is Strofilia, a forest that looks as if it fell out of a fairytale. The Greek garden of Eden is a place where sand dunes and pine trees live in peace and harmony. The unique landscape of this forest is largely owed to the west wind which sculpted it into what we can see today.

Strofilia is not just amazing because it is a source of shade that is often much needed in Greece – it also encompasses Mavra Vouna hills, Prokopos Lake, and the Kotychi Lagoon. Hidden within these areas are numerous species of plants and birds and even a fish farm! Go hiking and explore this paradise lost while you’re already here.

Visiting Kalogria is opening yourself up to the best of what Peloponnese and the Ionian Sea have to offer. Quiet beach and chilly, shallow water are just waiting for you, enticing you to come and experience them. For anyone looking to rest and let their mind wander, free from harrows of everyday life – then this is the place for you. The wonderful 8,500-mile long coastline of Greece is filled to the brim with serene beaches and pristine waters, each equally deserving of attention from travelers. Among the most popular destinations in the Aegean Sea is Chalkidiki and its three ‘fingers’ (or ‘legs’ if you ask the Greek people). Each has an incredible wealth of sprawling sandy beaches and every one of them is worth at least several articles. But for now, let’s focus on the second ‘finger’ called Sithonia and the stunning Karidi Beach in Vourvourou.

Getting to Karidi

The airport nearest to Vourvourou is Thessaloniki Airport, with about 50 miles in between that you’ll need to cover. Getting to your destination won’t be the easiest task, and you have several options at hand.

First of all, there is no direct bus line to the village. You’d have to take an OASTH bus (Thessaloniki urban transport organization ) from the airport to the nearest KTEL station. KTEL runs intercity transportation, and you’ll be able to find a bus that goes to Sithonia. Depending on whether it’s the low or high season when you arrive, you might have to wait too long for your ride. To alleviate this problem, take the bus to Nea Moudani and when you get there, transfer to a Vourvourou bus. A direct Thessaloniki to Vourvourou ride takes four hours and costs €13.30.

Secondly, there’s a taxi. However, if you’re traveling alone or as a couple, the taxi might prove to be very detrimental to your budget. They usually charge €120-€130 for a ride this long, and despite it being the easiest way to go about getting to your destination, it’s certainly not the cheapest one.

Finally, you can always rent a car. Have your passport and driver’s permit at hand if you get pulled over, and be careful driving to Sithonia as there are many unpredictable twists and turns that could prematurely end your vacation. Make sure to actually reserve a vehicle before arriving, as high season often impacts renting prices and car availability. Most of all, be mindful of Greek drivers and their reputation for being somewhat… unpredictable.

Alternative: Kavala Airport is also fairly close with 66 miles to your destination.

Finally at the Beach

After finally arriving at Vourvourou one way or another, your vacation can truly commence. Getting to Karidi Beach will be a triviality – just follow the crowds and the seductive smell of salt water in the air!

The first thing you’ll probably notice is that the land here is not barren at all, despite being constantly battered by the scorching sun and Sithonian winds. Scattered pine trees provide enough shade for families to huddle under, and bring certain coolness to otherwise hot, dry air. After finding your way through a belt of these natural sun umbrellas, you’ll be greeted by a divine visage of Karidi and turquoise waters washing it.

Bounded by two rocky capes on both ends, Karidi takes the shape of a crescent. The interior of the crescent resembles a huge aquamarine pool of crystal-clear water with soft sands beneath your feet. The thin stretch of the beach itself also consists of fine sand, locked between a line of pine trees and the Aegean Sea on the other side. A rogue shrub here and there breaks the otherwise unspoiled layer of powdery white sand, perfect for putting down your towel and planting a parasol. No matter which slice of the beach you claim for yourself, you’ll have a wonderful view of the calm sea, almost matching the color of the sky, and the faint blur of Agion Oros (the third ‘finger’) in the distance.

As you may have figured out now, Karidi is facing northeast, meaning you’ll be protected from the aforementioned winds that rustle Sithonia. This translates to less of your stuff flying away and the sea being much calmer and tame.

As you can imagine, Karidi Beach looks like a small bay due to its crescent shape. The water is quite shallow here, with most adults being able to wade through it for more than 150 feet. This makes Karidi the perfect travel destination for families with children, as the young ones will be able to enjoy the ever warm water without the fear of going too deep while learning to swim. Combine this with the fact that the beach here is completely public, with no bars, restaurants, or overpriced sunbeds, and you’ll come to the conclusion that this is exactly the right place for families or people wanting to rest, relax, and enjoy themselves.

Obviously, there are a couple of downsides to this beach. The first and the most egregious one are the crowds. Sithonia is a popular summer holiday destination and its beaches, including this one, can get overcrowded real fast. Considering this beach really isn’t that big to begin with, it can be a serious problem, the one that you’ll solve by arriving very early or much later in the day. The lack of deep water can be a problem for adults, however, there are many inlets nearby with much more significant drops where you can go swimming and diving.

To sum up, Karidi is:

Good for families with children and people looking to relax, as there is no loud music to be heard and the sea is calm, warm, and shallow.

Bad for partygoers as this small town doesn’t really pride itself on great nightlife options.

Other Activities in Vourvourou

There’s more to this town than just its divine beaches.

You can rent a boat, kayak, or even a jet ski if that’s what you prefer. Diving and snorkeling are also common pastimes, thanks to a beautiful coral reef just off the coast of Vourvourou. Other than that, you can always go hiking and exploring the surrounding area, as there are some truly breathtaking places to be rediscovered. Recently, a restaurant’s opened just outside Karidi. Melia is the perfect place to grab a bite on your way to and from the beach with its fine selection of local delicacies.

Karidi in Sithonia should be your next holiday destination if you plan on relaxing, sunbathing and wading the shallow waters. While there are some activities you could enjoy, the small slice of heaven in the Aegean Sea is much more suited to those just looking to veg.

Spending just two days in any single state of the Indian subcontinent might, quite understandably so, seem inadequate. The bountiful cultural and spiritual heritage of this Asian country is so expansive that not even a whole month spent here would do it justice, and the same goes for the southwestern state of Karnataka. That is why you must find the most valuable tourist places in Karnataka for 2 days, avoiding the less relevant elements and making the most out of your time.

Suffice it to say that you won’t be able to see nearly the number of places that you’ll like, especially considering the distance between most of the famous destinations and the limited time frame. Regardless of which side of the country you’re coming from, you’ll find something here. But, do keep in mind that you’ll make the most of these two days you have at your disposal by renting a car. Every other form of transportation might be too slow or unpredictable and you’d end up disappointed.

Mangalore – Coorg – Mysore

If you’re visiting Karnataka from abroad by plane, you basically have two options since only the cities of Mangalore and Bangalore have international airports.

As anyone who’s ever visited the beautiful coastal city of Mangalore in the southwestern part of Karnataka will tell you, you could spend way more than just two days hanging around all the breathtaking landmarks. That’s why you’ll need to make every visit count, and we would gladly help you by sending you in the direction of Lighthouse Hill Garden and Kateel Temple. The former is pretty self-explanatory, while the latter houses the goddess Durga Parmeshwari and is the most important temple of its kind in India. Big history buffs should make their way to the Sultan’s Battery, remains of a fort that used to guard the river mouth.

If you’re hungry, try Gajalee, one of the best seafood restaurants in the country. It will be a great way to start your 2-day trip to Karnataka. Gauge how much time you’ve spent visiting these places because you have to count on spending 12 hours on the road if you need to make the return trip to Mangalore.

Mangalore to Coorg: Take Mangalore – Mysore Highway

For those not wanting to remove Coorg from the equation, your only two options are either renting a car or grabbing a taxi. If you want to skip Coorg, you can either go by train or by bus directly to Mysore, but you’d miss out on a lot of experience this way.

Coorg, or Kodagu, is a district of Karnataka, with Madikeri as its capital, which is also where you’ll arrive first taking the highway. Unlike the other two Coorg is so huge that you might want to skip out on visiting Mysore at all. It’s best known for great coffee and plantations you can actually visit and see where all of their indigenous beans are coming from. But, it’s not the only drink they consume here, better hope you can stomach their pineapple wine because that’s what you’ll be having!

Hike up Thadiyandamol to unlock the awe-inspiring vistas of Coorg, which might also reveal several hidden waterfalls such as Iruppu (if you know where to look).

Finally, you’ll want to spend some time in Madikeri after all, so check out the forts and ancient temples that grace it, much like every other town in India. As this is probably where the dark will catch you, spend the night at one of the comfy guest houses before proceeding.

Coorg to Mysore: Take Mangalore – Mysore Highway

You’re at the end of this particular two days trip and in the city of Mysore. The first and foremost thing you’ll have to do is get to Mysore Palace. Such magnificence and grandeur will come as a crowning jewel of your journey from Mangalore.

Since you’ve spent a lot of your time available already, we’d advise seeing either Mysore Zoo or St. Philomena’s Cathedral. Try local delicacies in Sapphire or Tiger Trail restaurants before heading back to Mangalore. For your return trip, take the car, bus or the train, but the highway might be the fastest way home.

Ooty – Bandipur – Nagarhole

Coimbatore International Airport

You’ll need about three hours from Coimbatore International Airport to Ooty, which is the best option as it’s closest. However, Bangalore is also an option as it flies to more cities, but it’s a 6-hour ride away.

There’s no doubt about it – Ooty is the perfect getaway for all those calling themselves nature lovers. And not just Ooty mind you, this entire route will be a lesson in biology, as both Bandipur and Nagarhole are national parks with tiger reserves in them. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, you’re in Ooty now, and you’ll probably want to eat something first! Your best option is the main bazaar where locals eat too, so you’ll learn about the local cuisine and also try their homemade chocolates and honey. Speaking of which, Wax Museum is an absolute must-see, so drop by.

The ‘Queen of the Hill Stations’ as Ooty is also called has beautiful botanic gardens and an amazing viewing point called Dolphin’s Nose. A great way to explore the Nilgiri Hills where Ooty is located is by taking a 28-mile toy train ride that will quite literally open up the secrets of Tamil Nadu for you. Yes, for the time being, you’re not in Karnataka, but you’re about to cross soon.

Ooty to Bandipur: Take Mysore – Ooty Road

You have no other options for this journey really but by car. However, it’s one stop that you really need to make as Bandipur National Park is just awesome and not something you see every day. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the best tourist places in Karnataka for 2 days as you can see it quite quickly and then get on with your journey.

There are plenty of things here you could do, from going on a Jeep Safari to Elephant Riding. You’ll be able to observe tigers in their natural habitat and also go on nature walks. There’s even a temple here if you care to visit it on this day outing, called Gopalaswamy Betta.

Bandipur to Nagarhole: Take NH766

Also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, Nagarhole park offers yet another insight into the wildlife of India. You can find out all about the rich selection of animals and plants that call this region their home but also visit the shy Rameshwara Temple. Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is also an absolute must if you happen to end up here.

Our recommendation is to spend an entire day in Ooty and visit the national parks in one go on the following day.

Kabini River 2-day Tour

Bangalore International Airport

If you’re arriving from abroad, you’ll land in Bangalore. However, for those already in India, you can skip this step and get on a flight to Mysore and remove Bangalore from your plans altogether. Whether you go from Bangalore to Mysore by car, bus or train doesn’t really matter – it’ll take you some 4 hours to get to Kabini River Lodge.

If you’re not that interested in adventure trekking the hillsides around Ooty or checking out the lavish palaces of Mysore, you’ll be happy to hear about a way more interesting and relaxing way to explore that nature and wildlife of Karnataka.

As it so happens, you can get in on a tour of the Kabini River, one of the estuaries of the mighty Kaveri. The lodge from which your boat safari begins is located about 56 miles from Mysore, so this is where you need to go. The most common way that tourists get from Mysore to the lodge is by cab, which happens to be both quick enough and cheap.

Check in at the lodge and make good use of their Nagarhole National Park tours (day 1) and try the local delicacies at the Gol Ghar restaurant. You’ll get to meet the staff and the area, before heading out on a boat tour the following morning.

On the next day, you’ll have a guaranteed time of your life. You’ll get to see the best natural features of Karnataka, but also the elephants, crocodiles, and tigers prowling along the shore of Kabini River. As you reach the end of the boat ride, you’ll be offered a lavish, nourishing meal and that will be the end of the tour.

Raichur – Hampi – Bangalore

The airport closest to Raichur is in fact 100 miles away, so you’ll definitely have some driving to do, but you’ll be rewarded with such an imposing collection of landmarks that will really make you forget about the long drive and make you feel as if you’ve seen all the world’s wonders in just 2 days.

The wonders we’re referring to are of course the Raichur Fort, with its two layers of high walls coercing any potential invaders, and temples of glorious past.

These religious buildings are the face of Raichur, and those on a more spiritually orientated journey will appreciate the many temples such as Ramagadde, Jami Masjid, Markandeshwara Temple and many others.

Raichur to Hampi: Take Raichur Road

The next step on your spiritual journey is, naturally, Hampi. This temple town has got some of the finest pieces of Hindu architecture that you could possibly want to see, confirmed by the fact that it is in its entirety protected by UNESCO. Among tourist places in Karnataka for 2 days, it’s Hampi that provides the highest cultural and historic value, especially when combined with Raichur. The most commonly visited temples are Sri Virupaksha Temple, Hemakuta Hill Temple Complex, Hanuman Temple, and Vijaya Vittala Temple.

Besides the temples, enjoy the Archaeological Museum of Hampi, before you start making your way back your way back to Hyderabad, or onwards to Bangalore for your flight.

We realize that some of these places might be a stretch and quite difficult to experience in just two days. However, you can always modify this list by removing places you don’t care about and those that you feel are redundant. A lot of tourists, for example, like to spend so much time in Coorg that they would never think about adding Mysore to their itinerary. Plan a route that’s best for you and what you want to achieve!

4. Hartford

Saratoga Springs

As always, don’t buy your ticket on the train as the price goes up by at least $5, buy it online before the trip.

Harriman State Park

Located at only 30 miles from the city of New York is the second largest park in the state, and quite easily accessed at that.

With 47,527 acres of pure, unspoiled nature, Harriman State Park is understandably often frequented by people from the city. Whether you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of such a huge metropolis or to conquer the 200 miles of hiking trails of differing levels of endurance required, Harriman is the best place to be. Hudson has also seen an upheaval of arts and galleries where these said pieces of art can be exhibited. Getting here by train: The distance from New York to Hudson is not to be sneezed at – 127 miles! You can consider this to be out of range for your regular Metro-North Railroad, so you’ll have to take Amtrak. Expect at least a two-hour long journey, that’s going to cost you no less than $39 in one way.

Princeton

Even though the city of Princeton, New Jersey has become synonymous with Princeton University, which is in itself not a bad thing, but regardless of it, there are still more than a handful of interesting places to visit and things to do.

For starters, take a tour of Grounds for Sculpture. With only a $15 entrance fee, you’ll be able to enjoy the most unusual array of artsy displays that range from unique architecture to outdoor decorations and aquatic wonders. Morven Museum and Garden will introduce you to the Stockton family and their heritage, while Landau/Einstein Museum will boggle the mind with a combination of wool and, well, Einstein!

Considering how big Philadelphia really is, a weekend getaway is probably not going to be enough to see even half of it. Lake Placid

Unlike the previous entries on our list, Lake Placid actually puts serious distance between itself and the Big Apple.

However, as any New Yorker will tell you, Lake Placid is an absolute daydream that will really make you appreciate deciding to come here. The lake is not just simply beautiful, but it’s also rather huge with 2,170 acres of water that goes 50 feet deep at some points. Located in the Adirondack Mountains north of New York, by the village of Lake Placid, you will come to understand the true meaning of raw, natural beauty.

Seen today, Tirupati might seem an ordinary Indian city, donning the rich spiritual and cultural heritage as if it were a lovely dress. The story begins with Kali Yuga, or ‘era of strife and disorder’. In Hindu mythos, Yuga is an epoch consisting of four stages, with Kali Yuga beings the last one, almost completely deprived of all morality and spirituality.

Lord Brahma, one of the Trimurti (the holy trinity of supreme lords of Hinduism), had realized that humans are going to need divine help in order to overcome Kali Yuga, and so he sent Sage Narada to Earth where maha yagnam, or great sacrifice, was about to commence.

Alternative: In another version of the story, there’s no mention of Sage Narada nor Brahma. Instead, it is Sage Kashyapa who’s selecting of the other sages, or rishis, to invite one of the supreme lords of Trimurti to attend maha yagnam as the main guest. Regardless of the version of the story, it is Sage Bhrigu who is chosen for this occasion.

Narada challenges them to find the most supreme being of Trimurti, a task that rishis did not expect. Sage Bhrigu takes it upon himself to bring one of the gods to maha yagnam, as he possessed a third eye on the sole of his right foot, granting him access to other worlds.

First, he visits Satyaloka, the abode of mighty Lord Brahma. He introduces himself and asks Brahma to let him in on the ultimate knowledge, referring to Narada’s challenge. He utters the question three times, but he is not met with a response from Brahma who is listening to the divine music of his wife Saraswati. Angered at such indifference from one of the supreme gods, Sage Bhrigu curses Brahma to never have even a single follower on Earth.

Then, he makes his way to Kailasha, where he finds the lord of that abode, Shiva, being locked in an ecstatic dance called Tandavam with Parvati. Again, he asks the god for knowledge three times, but he is met with silence. Now already enraged, Sage Bhrugu curses Shiva to forever be revered as nothing but a Lingam.

Finally, the sage reaches Vaikuntha, the celestial home of Lord Vishnu. He was accompanied by his female counterpart and consort Lakshmi. Bhrigu approached Vishnu and his wife, again giving them his name and asking for knowledge three times. As you can expect, Vishnu ignores him like all the others. Infuriated by how the gods have been treating him, Sage Bhrigu kicks Vishnu in the chest with his right foot. Acting all surprised and apologetic, Vishnu beseeches the sage to forgive him for ignoring him. He compassionately inquires about sage’s foot, pretending to worry about whether it got hurt and offered to massage it. When Sage Bhrigu agreed, Vishnu grabbed ahold of him by the foot, and then took out sage’s third eye by force! With the third eye now gone, Bhrigu’s egoism and anger seemed to dissipate as well, so he fell on his knees and asked the god for forgiveness, which he granted.

All the while, Goddess Lakshmi was observing this altercation. She was furious at Vishnu for forgiving the sage hitting him in the chest, as the chest is where she lived. Taking it is as a sign of utmost disrespect for her, Lakshmi leaves Vaikuntha. Vishnu leaves his abode as well, trying to find her.

The Search for Lakshmi

Lord Vishnu scoured the Earth in the form of Srinivasa, trying to find his wife, Lakshmi, but to no avail.

Finally, he had reached Tirumala hills near Tirupati and there, he sat down in a shade to meditate, with Lakshmi’s name on his lips. He had been meditating for so long, that an ant hill started forming around him. Seeing these events unfold, Brahma and Shiva decided to help him, so they transformed into a cow and calf respectively. They joined a local herd of cows and stopped by the ant hill each day so that Brahma can deposit the milk of its udders down the ant hill and into Vishnu’s mouth.

However, it wasn’t long before cow-herder realized that one of the cows never gave any milk. He followed the cow and witnessed it pouring all the milk down the anthill. Angre overcame him, and so he tossed his axe at the cow. Suddenly, Vishnu burst out of the ground to protect the cow (Brahma) and the axe struck his forehead. Seeing that he hurled an axe at a deity, the cow-herder fell dead.

Alternative: In a slightly different story, Vishnu forgives the man for this unspeakable act, but that version leaves the recount of a Chola king that is now to follow.

Vishnu’s blood sprayed the cow, which then made its way to the king of Cholas. Brahma, still in the shape of a cow, led the king to the place where Vishnu was. Cursing him as the man responsible for his cow-herder’s crime, Vishnu turned the Chola king into a Rakshasa, a demon. The king begged forgiveness, which Vishnu promised to grant only if the king gives him a crown in his next life.

After this event, the king was eventually reincarnated as Akasa Raja.

Srinivasa and Padmavathi

Wounded and bleeding, Srinivasa sought shelter in the forest, where a woman instantly recognized him.

Vakula Devi was a reincarnation of Yasoda, Lord Krishna’s foster mother. She realized that Srinivasa was her son, and gave him motherly love and protection. While Vishnu was incarnated as Krishna, he didn’t marry and had no children. He promised to Yasoda that he would do so in the next life. Vakula Devi remembered this promise and hoped Srinivasa would fulfill it.

One day, Srinivasa was hunting an elephant and chased it all the way to palace gardens of Akasa Raja. There, the elephant came across Padmavathi, adopted daughter of Akasa Raja, frightening her horribly. Srinivasa used his divine power to tame the elephant and send him away, saving the girl. They immediately fell in love, and Srinivasa had forgotten all about Lakshmi. He sent his mother, Vakula Devi, to talk to Akasa Raja and ask for his daughter’s hand. But before she appeared at his court, Srinivasa took the form of a Yerukala Sani, a soothsayer. He came to Akasa Raja and let him know that Srinivasa is actually Vishnu and thus improved his odds quite a bit.

The Wedding

Naturally, Akasa Raja said yes and gave his crown as one of the wedding gifts. Thus, his soul was free from the demonic curse.

Since Srinivasa and his mother had no money, he asked the Hindu deity of wealth named Kubera for a loan. Kubera was more than happy to provide, but he demanded that the loan be returned with interest. Until Vishnu’s debt was repaid, he wouldn’t be able to return to Vaikuntha, his celestial abode. Srinivasa and Padmavathi were able to have the grandest of weddings, attended by all the gods and goddesses.

Venkateshwara

After some 6 months since the wedding, Sage Narada brought the news of this event to Goddess Lakshmi.

Not believing a word of it, she went to see for herself. After confronting the two of them, Lakshmi and Padmavathi began quarreling. At the sight of two women fighting and squabbling, Srinivasa turned into a granite rock in front of their very eyes, thus becoming Venkateshwara, or ‘Lord of the Hill’. Brahma and Shiva appeared to explain that this was all a part of the grander plan, the plan for Vishnu to remain on Earth and guide the people through the turmoil of Kali Yuga. Hearing this, Lakshmi and Padmavathi both decided to remain at his side, becoming stone idols. Lakshmi sits at his left, while Padmavathi is at his right side of the chest.

After some time, Tondaman, a reincarnation of Randagasa who was a loyal devotee of Vishnu, was passing by the place where Venkateshwara was and saw a vision of Lord Vishnu. When he inherited the kingdom from his father, Tondaman raised the temple at that place, the very temple that we now know as Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple.

Balaji

So, where does Tirupati Balaji come into place? Put simply, Balaji is yet another name for Vishnu, or Srinivasa, or Venkateshwara. This is quite common in Hindu texts, so we could have as well referred to him as Lord Balaji all this time.

One of the legends says that Vishnu would appear as a little boy to a man who wanted to commit suicide. Bal, or balak, is a word for ‘boy’ while ‘ji’ is a suffix denoting respect in Hindi. Another story tells of a symbol on the granite statue’s forehead washing away, leaving only the symbol that women usually draw on their foreheads. In Sanskrit, ‘bala’ means ‘woman’, hence – Tirupati Balaji story. Story of a woman, or boy, in Tirupati where the Balaji Temple is located.

Visits to the Temple

As we’ve established before, Lord Vishnu is indebted to Kubera for frontloading the gold that was needed to have the wedding.

Today, millions of devotees come to the temple and leave offerings to help Vishnu pay his debt off. At one point, people of Bangalore wanted to determine how much money was Kubera still owed so that they could repay him! They also sometimes leave strands of hair to honor the woman that helped Vishnu when he appeared as a child. However, it’s not just Vaishnavas that come here.

Tourists from all over the world come to see the marvels of the Balaji Temple, as it’s structurally and stylistically quite imposing. There are three Dwarams or entrances that lead to sanctum sanctorum. Above the temple, there’s a magnificent white Gopuram that appears to be touching the sky. In sanctum sanctorum, you’ll find the protagonist of Tirupati Balaji story – Venkateshwara. Surrounded by five smaller deities, the lavish statue of Vishnu features the two loving goddesses on each side of his chest.

There are many legends that walk hand in hand with the statue of Vishnu to this day, so if you plan on visiting, make sure to get a guide who will tell you all about this sweating (yes, sweating) god who is resistant to chemical treatments.

But, the temple is not the only reason to visit Tirupati. Less than a mile from it, there is a natural wonder known as Silathoranam. This rocky arch is 26 feet wide and 9 feet tall and considered to be one of the 26 geological monuments of India.

The End

This story won’t really have an end until the end of Kali Yuga when Vishnu reincarnates again and destroys the world. If you aim to visit the temple and appease the god of end times, bathe yourselves in Pushkarini River just as his loyal servant Randagasa did, and Lord Balaji might just appear before your eyes!
